2015 LCF

Sunday’s League Cup Final result was a big disappointment but it was great to visit the new Wembley and see our stone plaque on the equivalent of Hollywood’s walk of fame.

Chelsea won 2-0. All the independent reviews said we were the better team. Their goals were both deflections. We hit the woodwork and had a goal disallowed. Harry Kane ran their defence ragged. Their defenders developed rubber legs and fell over every time we fought for the ball.

Mourinho’s constant moaning over recent weeks about how refs don’t protect his players enough finally had the desired result as we saw the ref hesitate and let Chelsea players get away with dives and professional fouls all afternoon. Still, credit where credit’s due. That is what makes him a great tactician. He has been working that situation up for weeks so that it takes effect on the referees’ psyche just at the crucial point of the season. Very much in the style of Alex Ferguson.

Still, congrats to Chelsea. Mourinho has bought another great side with the Russian’s roubles using their Champions League status to secure the biggest stars. A side full of talented players and he still knows how to win when it really matters. Can’t really begrudge them having their first cup final win against us after defeats in1967 and 2008 and all those years they spent languishing in the lower divisions.  really don’t know how I still manage to get into such scrapes at my age and in my condition. If you submitted my experiences as a script for a TV series, they would say it is too far- fetched...

The term “great” is overused. In Dave Mackay’s case it is fully justified. A great player. A great manager. A leader of men. A winner. Courageous. Skillful. He passed away the other day aged 80. Part of Spurs’ heart and soul. A sad day.

...We only got home at lunchtime Monday after our car was impounded in error behind an impenetrable fence.

My life-preserving drugs were locked inside. We had to book ourselves into a hotel and I only just avoided hospital by skin of my teeth. Rescued by the bouncers on the door of a rave party in a pub / club who let us in to shelter. I ended up manning the bouncers' table. Then a fight broke out! They were all Spurs supporters thank God but drunk as skunks...
